Former Melbourne City coach John van’t Schip says young side is on the right track

FORMER Melbourne City boss John van’t Schip is proud to see his former proteges making an impact, as the club persists with young players.

Young Melbourne City defender Ruon Tongyik has been impressive this season.
Right-back Dylan Pierias, 16, is likely to start again after becoming the first player born this century to feature in the A-League, while defender Ruon Tongyik, 20, and midfielder Denis Genreau, 17, have been named in Saturday’s squad.

City is away to Wellington Phoenix. Bruno Fornaroli, Tim Cahill, Luke Brattan and Fernando Brandan headline the returns after seven players were suspended for last week’s draw with Brisbane Roar. Speaking for the first time since his departure, van’t Schip said Pierias thrived after being thrown in the deep end.

“Young players when they come in need to be ready and in this case maybe it was a bit forced because of suspensions and injuries,” he said.

“We’ve always known Dylan is a player that in the future was going to be the new right fullback, but because of his age he had a bit of time to get physically ready.

“Not his speed or athleticism, more his body in the one on one. Dylan is very smart, he’s quick, very brave, not scared of anyone.

“Those things together make him a very interesting player to play as a fullback.

“He’s played left fullback too, but right-back is his best position.’’

Van’t Schip, who quit in early January to be by the side of his sick father, revealed he was still watching closely from Holland as City tries to keep its title hopes alive.

The Dutchman was never scared to debut youngsters, giving Curtis Good, Eli Babalj, Craig Goodwin and Stefan Mauk their first taste of action.

He was thrilled to see City continue on its youth path, while aiming for more trophies.

“For me personally the pride of seeing young players coming through, like now Genreau, Dylan, Daniel Arzani and Tongyik (was a highlight),’’ he said.

“Getting those players playing regularly in the A-League has always been something that I really enjoyed, to have a good mix with experienced players

“It’s too early to say this player or that player (will make it overseas), they need time to develop, to get into the first team and start playing games.’’
